Terms, privacy and refunds

These required seller details are still blank in src/lib/legal.ts: legalName, email, address. EU distance-selling rules require a buyer to be able to identify and contact the seller before ordering. Fill them in before taking any payment.
Who you are buying from
To be completed before launch.
What you are buying
You are buying time. €1 buys 1 hour of light for The Lamp of Hope, and larger amounts buy proportionally more. The price you see is the total price; there are no fees on top.
This is a one-off purchase. There is no subscription, no account, and nothing recurring.
The Lamp of Hope is an independent interactive art project. Your payment is an ordinary commercial purchase and funds the development, operation and maintenance of the lamp. It is not a donation, not a charitable contribution, and not tax-deductible. No part of the price is presented as supporting any cause or organisation.
When you get it
The lamp has not been lit yet. Minutes bought now are held and delivered in full at the moment it is lit. The ignition date will be published here before any payment is taken.
The lamp will be lit with 7 days of light provided by the project itself, in addition to every minute bought in advance.
Cancelling and refunds
If you are a consumer in the EU you normally have 14 days to withdraw from a distance purchase and get your money back.
Before the lamp is lit: your minutes have not been delivered yet, so you can withdraw within 14 days of buying and receive a full refund. Email us and we will refund you and remove the minutes.
Once the lamp is lit: your minutes are delivered immediately and begin burning, so the purchase is performed as soon as it is made. By buying, you ask for that immediate delivery and accept that the withdrawal right does not survive it.
If the lamp is never lit: if we do not light it by the published date, or we abandon the project, everyone who bought minutes in advance is refunded in full.
If something goes wrong with a payment — you were charged twice, or your minutes never arrived — tell us and we will fix it. That is separate from withdrawal and is not time-limited.
The lamp can go out, and that is the point
The lamp burns down in real time. When it runs out of time it goes out permanently and cannot be relit, by us or by anybody else. This is the entire nature of the project and it is not a fault.
Buying minutes keeps the lamp lit for exactly as long as those minutes last. It does not buy any promise about how long the lamp will survive overall, because that depends on what everyone else does. If the lamp goes out after your minutes have burned, you have received what you paid for.
Leaving your name
After buying you may optionally add a name or nickname, a country and a short message. All three are optional and everything is anonymous by default.
Whatever you add is published on the site and stays in the lamp's history. Please do not put anything private in it. We may hide messages that are abusive, unlawful or deliberately disruptive.
What we know about you
No account, no login, no tracking cookies, and no advertising or third-party analytics.
Your payment is handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. We keep a record of each purchase: the amount, the minutes bought, the time, and Stripe's own reference numbers, so we can match payments and issue refunds. Stripe processes your data under its own privacy policy.
Anything you choose to publish — name, country, message — is stored and shown publicly until you ask us to remove it.
Visitor counts are kept as a one-way hash that is re-salted every day, so visits cannot be linked from one day to the next and cannot be traced back to a person. We do not store IP addresses.
You can ask us at any time for a copy of what we hold, or to remove your published name, country and message. We will remove them, leaving an anonymous entry. The record of the payment itself has to stay, because we are required to keep accounting records.
If you think we have handled your data badly, you can complain to Datatilsynet, the Danish Data Protection Agency.
